Here's the good news: Disney is finally creating their first African-American princess. Here's the bad news: They just can't seem to get it right. The first version, The Frog Princess, was scrapped due to complaints that it was too stereotypical. The princess, named Maddy, was to be a chambermaid who worked for a spoiled white woman. Maddy is saved from a voodoo magician by a white prince, with help from her voodoo fairy godmother.
Disney's second version -- The Princess and the Frog --is still a musical set in New Orleans, but the company is keeping mum on most of the details. The heroine will be a 19-year-old named Tiana, and the film will be set in the Jazz Age. Disney says, "Princess Tiana will be a heroine in the great tradition of Disney's rich animated fairy tale legacy, and all other characters and aspects of the story will be treated with the greatest respect and sensitivity." Let's all hope they do exactly that.

guess we'll have to wait to see on THAT one. i don't care for disney at all anyway.
Like Rebecca, I'm not a big Disney fan but it will be interesting to see what they come up with. I'll give them credit for at least trying.
Hmmmmmph, I'm a bit disappointed. A year or so ago I'd heard that the princess was actually going to be practicing Voudou and now they've decided to have her saved from a Voudouist. -- Oh, well. They're still trying I guess. I just don't understand why she can't be a regular ole' princess like the others...
Do you suppose those other Fairy God Mothers were Wiccan ??? -- Please, don't get me started.
interesting. After all it is a fairy tale and this is the year of first for AA.. Let's hope it will at least have a happy ending.:D
I'm curious to see how that turns out. Glad they threw the first one in "the Frog Princess" in the trash. I have so many issues and comments about that, but I'll keep it to myself...for now. lol.
Oh dear. While I'm thrilled that we finally get our own princess, I can't even believe they even went there with the voodoo stuff. OMGoodness. Let's just be glad her name isn't Shenequa.
I don't support most Disney efforts, their films are filled with so many problems/stereotypes.
Ummmm... question!!! Why does the brown-skinned princess have to be the frog princess or associated with frogs at all?? Why can't she be the butterfly princess or the swan princess, or even a pretty pearl princess???
Just wondering....
