Ok, it's 12:30 in the morning and I've finished off one sock. IT HAS GOT TO BE THE UGLIEST THING I'VE EVER SEEN. Would you believe that after frogging it several times, I finally get to the end of over 20 pages of instructions when I find out that I actually have to sew a seam at the toe! Geez, couldn't it have just worked it's way into a nice square toe without me having to use my nonexistent sewing skills!
Tomorrow, or rather today, I get together with my knitting buddies. I'll let them do a post mortem on it and hopefully I'll get some advice. Maybe, just maybe, I'll show y'all a picture and all of you sockaholics can have a big laugh on me.

You say the sock is ugly. Sometimes we can be our own harshest critics. But just think about how awesome your future socks will be!
What about using the kitchner stitch, then you are still knitting!! (my KS is still horribly nasty looking). We can have ugly toe tips together and no one will ever need to know!!!
I signed up for the "my first toes up" Kal, no ugly toes to finish then!! and learning a new cast on method, always good!!!
I'm sure they look great, you don't do anything not fabulous!!
I simply love knitting socks. I'm on my 6th pair, and where I started out doing fancy I've found out that there is nothing nicer than a simple pair of socks.
I also dislike striped socks, and I'll try to remember to find my favorite brand of sock yarn, because I'm at work and I don't have it here. Too bad I can't get paid for knitting at work.
You're welcome for the leaf blower idea. We had one of those $40 blowers and it lasted one summer. My D.H. looked at the box and saw that it was rated to last about 30 hours. That would be about one summer. I paid over $300 for "the big one", but it'll last for at least 5 years, and I can get it fixed right down the road.
I have seen this sock.
It's a pretty nice sock, the only problem with it is that the gauge is way too loose- the next one will be knit on size zero needles.
It's just right to hang off of the mantel for Santa to fill with chocolate.
I'm sure it's not as bad as you think! And my first pair of socks I keep around the house just for a laugh -- they're totally ridiculous and unwearable. Your second sock will be better, I promise.

I will not laugh! (Promise!) I am proud of you for finishing it!! (I have had my first sock on my needles since June.) You are always most critical of you own work!! I say, CONGRATULATIONS on finishing it!!
